MIPS32® 24K® Processor Core Powers BroadLight’s New GPON Residential Gateway SoC

BroadLight is powering its new BL2348 GPON Residential Gateway (RG) SoC solution for fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) applications with the high-performance MIPS32® 24K® core. The new BL2348 RG SoC is available now and delivers the superior performance, integration and functionality required for the latest generation of Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) that connects the home network directly to the access network. According to BroadLight, the 24K core brings an unprecedented 650 Dhrystone MIPS performance to the GPON control plane processor of the BL2348 SoC.

MIPS recently introduced a new debug product. The Hot Spot Analyzer (HSA) is a new software utility for MIPS’ family of System Navigator™ EJTAG probes that enables fast, accurate profiling of the Linux kernel. With the HSA - which builds on the unique Zero Overhead Program Counter (PC) Sampling feature built into MIPS32® core families, software engineers can quickly identify program bottlenecks that may be restricting system performance. MIPS Technologies recently announced its first European University Program with the University of Porto, a prestigious Portuguese engineering school. The partnership will provide a foundation for educational research by the masters and doctoral programs of the school’s Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. As part of the multi-year agreement, MIPS will offer a hands-on design initiative for engineering students and help prepare them for careers in semiconductor design, where a large number of companies are already leveraging MIPS’ IP in a wide array of embedded designs. In the near future, MIPS plans to broaden this type of program in other regions around the world.

At the IET/GSA International Semiconductor Forum in May, Carlos Leme, CTO and VP of Wireless Solutions for MIPS’ Analog Business Group, took part in a panel discussion, “Process Choices for Analogue and RF Circuits in Mixed Signal Systems” and Dr. João Vital, VP of Data Conversion Solutions for the Analog Business Group, participated in a Town Hall Session on “Leveraging Talent and Opportunities through Diverse Design Centers.”
At April’s Multicore Expo in Silicon Valley in April, Vice President of Marketing for the Processor Business Group, Jack Browne, introduced the new 1004K Coherent Processing System.
At the Embedded Systems Conference Silicon Valley in April, and the co-located IP Symposium, MIPS presented “The Fundamentals of Multithreading,” and “Key Ingredients of an Effective Patent Application.”

MIPS Celebrates 10th Anniversary

In 2008, MIPS Technologies celebrates its 10th anniversary. The current quarter ending June 30 will mark the completion of MIPS’ 10th year as a public company. A lot has changed in those 10 years.
