MIPS SoCs Enabled for HTML5, Optimized for Opera
Mobile Browser: Why HTML 5?

According to many experts, graphical devices that do not support HTML5 will likely be obsolete in a matter of years. Technology moves fast, and now is the time for companies and developers to get on the train or be passed by.

MIPS Technologies is pleased to be on the express train with Opera Software's leading HTML5-based browsers. At Mobile World Congress and in the ensuing weeks, we joined with Opera to announce bringing the Opera Mobile browser to MIPS-Based mobile devices, and the Opera TV browser with WebGL to MIPS-Based DTVs, set-top boxes and other home entertainment devices. The majority of our SoCs are enabled to support HTML5 and are optimized to work with Opera Software's browsers.

Since April 2010, when Steve Jobs announced that HTML5 is the future of the web, the technology's profile and adherents have grown rapidly. More and more platforms and browsers have become HTML5 compatible, and a growing number of websites, videos, and apps are created or delivered in HTML5. Why is this important? Because HTML5 allows applications and cloud-based games, apps, videos, and other media-rich content to be experienced on TVs, mobile phones and PCs, independent of the intended target device. Other technology benefits include:

  • Multimedia and graphics: HTML5 allows for amazing 3D graphics with realistic lighting and shadows, reflections and texures, and high-performance features like 3D CSS, vector graphics (canvas and SVG), and WebGL turbocharge web apps. Games, movies and animation are taken to a whole new level.
  • Offline and storage: HTML5 APIs let developers create apps that work even when they’re not connected. Application cache, localStorage, sessionStorage, IndexedDB, File System and online and offline events enable apps to work with or without online connection. Users can even download large files (greater than 1GB) in-full or in-part for later offline viewing.
  • Performance: HTML5 results in more responsive web apps. Offline APIs can improve performance by enabling an app to quickly access locally stored data and minimize server requests. Developers can cache pages that users are likely to click, and store assets needed in the next task or game level. The result is faster load times.
  • Easier development: HTML5 lets developers target the largest number of devices with the least amount of development effort. No need to create several versions for different devices. Some customization is still needed, but it's a relatively small amount.
  • Video & Sound Capabilities: Developers can integrate video with HTML5 without having to use any plugins. Same goes for sound. HTML5 comes with a powerful support tool for audio elements.
